Contrasting Fate of Western Third Pole's Water Resources Under 21st Century Climate Change

چکیده
Seasonal melting of glaciers and snow from the western Third Pole (TP) plays important role in sustaining water supplies downstream. However, future availability region, even today's runoff regime, are both hotly debated inadequately quantified. Here, we characterize contemporary flow regimes systematically assess evolution total availability, seasonal shifts, dry wet discharge extremes four most meltwater-dominated basins TP, by using a process-based, well-established glacier-hydrology model, well-constrained historical reference climate data, ensemble 22 global models with an advanced statistical downscaling bias correction technique. We show that these face sharply diverging futures under 21st century change. In RCP scenarios 4.5 8.5, increased precipitation glacier Upper Indus Yarkant more than compensate for decreased winter accumulation, boosting annual summer through end century. contrast, Amu Syr Darya will become reliant on rainfall as ice decline. river-flows, already low, fall 16%–30% end-of-century, striking increases peak flood (by >60%), drought duration >1 month) intensity factor 4.6) compound considerable water-sharing challenges this major transboundary river.

Probabilistic projections of 21st century climate change over Northern Eurasia
We present probabilistic projections of 21st century climate change over Northern Eurasia using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Integrated Global System Model (IGSM), an integrated assessment model that couples an Earth system model of intermediate complexity with a two-dimensional zonal-mean atmosphere to a human activity model. Regional climate change is obtained by two downsc...
متن کامل21st century climate change in the Middle East
This study examined the performance and future predictions for the Middle East produced by 18 global climate models participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report. Under the Special Report on Emission Scenarios A2 emissions scenario the models predict an overall temperature increase of ∼1.4 K by mid-century, increasing to almost 4 K by late-century for t...
متن کاملClimate change and California drought in the 21st century.
Climate science has advanced over decades from an initial focus on the development and use of numerical models of Earth’s climate and compilation of rich networks of observational data, to now being in a position to “detect” and “attribute” specific impacts and events to anthropogenic climate change. Recent analyses have thus established the “fingerprint” of anthropogenic climate change in an i...
متن کاملForest Fires and Climate Change in the 21st Century
Fire is the major stand-renewing disturbance in the circumboreal forest. Weather and climate are the most important factors influencing fire activity and these factors are changing due to human-caused climate change. This paper discusses and synthesises the current state of fire and climate change research and the potential direction for future studies on fire and climate change. In the future,...
متن کاملCommitted changes in tropical tree cover under the projected 21st century climate change
Warming and drought pose a serious threat to tropical forest. Yet the extent of this threat is uncertain, given the lack of methods to evaluate the forest tree cover changes under future climate predicted by complex dynamic vegetation models. Here we develop an empirical approach based on the observed climate space of tropical trees to estimate the maximum potential tropical tree cover (MPTC) i...
